Sporadic email issues with Apple’s iOS 11

After releasing iOS 11, Apple and Microsoft have uncovered an issue with the Mail app. Users are sporadically unable to send or reply to email and an error appears stating “The server rejected the message.” ITS has confirmed the issue and is recommending to postpone upgrading to iOS 11 until Apple and Microsoft resolve this issue.

Please note: This only applies to iPhone or iPads upgraded to iOS 11.  You are not impacted if you are running a lower version of iOS, or are accessing your mail from your computer or the web.

Already upgraded to iOS 11?

If you upgraded to iOS 11 and are experiencing this issue, you can use the following workarounds until Apple and Microsoft release a fix:

  1. Use the OWA app (iPhone version & iPad version).
  2. Use Safari or another browser to go to o365.weill.cornell.edu to access your WCM email.
  3. Use the Outlook Mail App. However, please note that there are reports of sporadic issues with this app as well. If you are affected, you can attempt a reset of the app by using the following instructions:
  • In the Outlook app, tap the menu icon (three lines in the top left corner) > Tap the gear icon at the bottom left to access your settings > Tap the Office365 @med.cornell.edu account > Tap Reset Account
