macOS Sonoma coming Fall 2023

Apple has recently announced that its newest operating system will be called Sonoma, and is due for release to the general public later this Fall, likely around the end of October.

When Sonoma is released, a few things will happen:

  • ITS requires that tagged Apple laptops and desktops be installed with one of the three most recent OS, as stated in our computer security policy. As of the release of Sonoma, this will mean macOS 12 Monterey, macOS 13 Ventura, or macOS 14 Sonoma.
  • Apple will begin to sunset support for macOS 11 Big Sur

What does this mean for you? If you are currently using a Mac that runs on Big Sur, it’s time to upgrade!

If your computer needs to be updated to a new OS, or replaced with a new computer that can support a more modern operating system, you will receive email communications from your ITS Departmental Liaison in the coming weeks and months with more information.
