Windows 7 Support

ITS now supports Windows 7 Enterprise. You can upgrade your existing computer or have Windows 7 installed when your new computer arrives. Consider the following points when deciding to upgrade:

  • Eudora, Runway and Timbuktu are not available for Windows 7. Consequently, you'll have to switch to Outlook 2007 for email, the Windows Start Menu to launch applications and Microsoft Remote Desktop for remote connections. ITS can answer questions about these products, and Microsoft offers online tutorials.
  • Many vendors have not certified their software to work on Windows 7; examples include, NewYork-Presbyterian clinical applications such as Imagecast and WebPACS and the Cisco VPN Client (64-bit version); so, you may have issues with non-standard ITS applications, e.g., older versions of SPSS, etc.
  • You have to upgrade to Office 2007 to run the latest version of Outlook. The "look and feel" of Office changes because of the introduction of the Office 2007 ribbon.
  • We recommend that you don't install Windows 7 on Dell Optiplex models older than the 745; in addition, new computers and upgrades must meet our minimum hardware requirements.

For New Hardware Purchases
Windows 7 Enterprise can be put on your new computer when ITS connects the computer to the network. The process of purchasing a computer, sending in a request and scheduling a visit stays the same.

For Upgrades to Windows 7
If your computer meets the minimum requirements then have your department administrator fill out the online Windows 7 upgrade form.

ITS will charge a consultation fee of $75 an hour for the upgrade. The charges will be capped off at maximum $225 per upgrade. The fee includes the Windows 7 Enterprise license, and the upgrade time depends on how much data is being backed up and restored.
