Nov. 5: Security change to alter Office 365 on personal Windows devices

On November 5, ITS will apply a security policy enhancement intended to prevent institutional data, including Protected Health Information (PHI), from being stored on personal devices that are not supported by ITS. This helps protect the WCM network from a data breach, and it helps protect our users from accidentally storing sensitive information on their personal Windows devices.

After Nov. 5, on a personal Windows device, you will not be able to:

  • Download institutional files from Office 365 applications (e.g. OneDrive, SharePoint, Word)

  • Access the Microsoft Teams desktop application

  • Use auto-save on desktop Office 365 applications. Make sure to save your files!

You will still be able to:

  • Access web-based Office 365 applications from your personal device, and view and edit documents online at O365.weill.cornell.edu

What can I do to mitigate the impacts of the security policy?

  1. Install Microsoft Apps directly from O365. While the apps will look and feel like desktop apps, they are web-based and safe to use on your personal device. You will be able to view and edit files, but won’t be able to save the files to your computer.
  2. Obtain a device that is supported by ITS.
