Update: ITS Support for Microsoft Windows 7

This is an update regarding the status of Information Technologies & Services support for Windows 7.

For New Hardware Purchases

If you are planning to purchase new hardware with Windows 7 installed, make sure that the system meets the minimum requirements outlined by Microsoft.

We recommend Dell Optiplex 745, 755, 760, 780 and 790.

The only edition of Windows 7 that will be connected to the WCMC network is Windows 7 Enterprise. If the machine is purchased with any other version of Windows 7 (i.e. Windows 7 Professional), it must be upgraded to Windows 7 Enterprise to be connected to the WCMC network. Windows 7 Enterprise will be provided by ITS as long as the machine is ITS-supported.

For Upgrades to Windows 7

If you are currently a Windows XP user planning to upgrade to Windows 7, Microsoft does not recommend it. Upgrading to Windows 7 from XP requires users to "to back up your current files and settings, perform a custom (clean) installation, and then reinstall your files, settings, and programs." Currently, ITS is working with a focus group on testing the upgrade process from Windows XP to Windows 7. Once testing has been completed, ITS will provide users assistance with this upgrade process as a consultation. Due to the time and work involved in upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7, ITS will charge the user an hourly consultation fee, not to exceed 3 hours. Users are responsible for ensuring that they have the original installation media for non-enterprise applications.

We will not install Windows 7 on Optiplex 620 or older models. All machines must still have a valid warranty and must meet the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 7.

ITS-supported applications and Windows 7
Below is an updated listing of compatibility testing for Windows 7 and ITS-supported applications for Windows:

Applications now compatible with Windows 7:

  • Microsoft Office 2010, including Microsoft Outlook
  • Mozilla Thunderbird
  • Cisco VPN Client (32-bit version)

Applications not certified by vendor for Windows 7:

  • GE Centricity Business (IDX) ( GE CB, Internet Explorer 8)
  • NewYork-Presbyterian clinical applications such as Imagecast and WebPACS (Internet Explorer 8)
  • Climacs
  • Cisco VPN Client (64-bit version)

Applications not supported under Windows 7:

  • Timbuktu (for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions)
  • ITS Runway
  • Eudora

Some non-enterprise applications may require you to upgrade to the latest application version to be compatible with Windows 7. To ensure compatibility, contact the application vendor.

We are working diligently to complete this certification process to fully support Windows 7. We will send another notification once this has been completed.
