Windows 7 Upgrade and Security

Earlier this month, we informed you about Microsoft's decision to cease all support for their Windows XP operating system. As a result, ITS is helping users still on XP upgrade to Windows 7. One of the main reasons for this is to ensure all of the computers connected to our network are up-to-date with security protocols that ITS has established to prevent malicious attacks.

Here is some information you need to know about Windows 7 and your online security at Weill Cornell.

What are the risks of using Windows XP?
Since Microsoft has discontinued its support of XP, this operating system will no longer receive important security patches that protect against malware. By using an XP machine, you are putting your WCMC accounts and personal information at risk.

ITS will be implementing a new software called FireAMP to increase security on XP machines at WCMC. This anti-virus software will supplement our current Symantec Endpoint software to provide added protection to Windows XP machines. However, FireAMP is not a long-term solution for XP users and will be used mainly to protect these machines before they are upgraded to Windows 7.

If you are running a managed Windows XP machine, FireAMP will be remotely installed on your computer in the coming weeks to help protect it from malware.

How can I tell if my XP computer is infected?
There are telltale signs that your computer has been infected, like your machine working much slower than usual. Be sure to visit our website to read about typical warning signs that your computer has been infected with malware. It is critical to contact the Service Desk immediately if you believe your computer has been compromised.

Note that if your XP computer is infected, ITS will have to remove it from the WCMC network and upgrade it to Windows 7 or work with you to find a replacement computer if your current one is not compatible with Windows 7.

How can I make sure my computer and data are safe?
Visit our Windows 7 Security page for more information on protecting your computer.

Upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as possible. You can view our Preparation Guide for information ITS will need to better assist you with your transition.

Contact ITS to help you upgrade. You can contact our Department Liaisons at BRMS@med.cornell.edu with questions about your current computer and software.
