Starting next month, the Wood Library may not be the quietest place to work as the next phase of the Feil Family Student Center renovation is set to begin. The 16,200-square-foot Feil Family Student Center, housed in renovated space on the first and second floors of the main campus buildings on York Avenue, will offer a place for classrooms, meetings, quiet study and informal gatherings to bring students together in the heart of the institution. Construction affecting the Library will begin in May 2018 and continue through the end of August 2019.
In mid-May, construction will commence on a new block of study rooms in what is now a corridor facing the front of the hospital. This space will lead to additional education space on the second floor via a new set of stairs. When the construction begins, a temporary wall will be built on the east side of the 24/7 study area facing the construction.
Renovation will continue over the summer, when ceiling work will be done in the 24/7 area in the Sunken Reading Room. During the months of June and July 2018, the entire 24/7 area in the Sunken Reading Room will be closed so that the project can be completed as quickly as possible. During this time, the Library’s common area, accessed from the 1300 York Lobby, will be open for study 24/7 to accommodate students while these prime study areas are closed. In addition, the newly finished classrooms on F2 and B2 are open to students 24/7. In August, the Sunken Reading Room and the 24/7 area will reopen for normal use and work will continue outside the Library, in the corridors and on both the first and second floors.

Capital Planning is working closely with Library and Education Administration to minimize the impact of the construction on student programs and library patrons. When the dust settles, The Feil Center will provide a spacious and modern hub for student life, innovation, and teaching, and will help to further realize the institution’s new curriculum.
