Alert on Cryptoblocker ransomware

ITS is monitoring a new "ransomware" known as Cryptoblocker that has infected computers at the Cornell Ithaca campus. Currently, this malware seems to be targeting Microsoft Windows systems. There have been no reports of infections on Weill Cornell computers, but our IT security team continues to track this malware to ensure it does not affect WCMC users.

What is ransomware?
Ransomware is malicious software that can encrypt data files on your computer with a key known only to the attacker. The files are still there, but are completely inaccessible to you without this key. The attackers then attempt to extort money from you in exchange for the key to unlock your files.

How can I protect my computer?
- Review our article "5 Tips to Avoid Internet Fraud" for more details on how you can protect your computer, data, and identity.

- Download and update anti-virus software on your computer. You can check the ITS Downloads page to download a copy of Symantec Endpoint on any ITS-tagged computer.

- Back up your files on a regular basis. ITS does perform incremental backups of ITS file shares, but any data on a user's workstation or a non-tagged device could be lost as a result of this malware. You can review how to back up your files on a Windows or Apple computer, but please contact the Service Desk if you have any questions on the process.

- If you suspect that your computer has been infected with malware, contact the Service Desk immediately so we can assist you.
