Changes to read receipt requests in Outlook

In an effort to combat phishing attempts against WCM, ITS will be making changes to how read receipts work in Outlook on Tuesday, Jan. 11. After this date, email addresses outside of WCM will no longer be able to require read receipts from WCM accounts. WCM faculty, staff, and students will still be able to request read receipts for any internal emails, or external emails sent outside of the institution.

How will this affect you?

If a WCM or tritdi.org user sends an email with a read receipt to an external address (e.g., nyp.org, mskcc.org, qatar-med.cornell.edu, gmail.com, etc.), they will still be able to receive notification that their email was opened.

If an external user (e.g., NYP, MSKCC, WCM-Qatar, Gmail, etc.) sends an email with a read receipt to a WCM or tritdi.org email address, the email will be delivered, but the read receipt requirement will be deleted before entering your inbox.

This change will not affect the functionality of your Outlook email account or the messages in your inbox.
