Email storage quota increase and changes to attachment size policy

Mailbox sizes increase to 5GB
Starting May 25, 2013, ITS will begin updating all WCMC email accounts to reflect a minimum storage space of 5GB, increasing from 1GB. This change will be done automatically, giving all users significantly more space to store emails at no additional charge. Departments that have been paying for 5GB of space or more will see the change reflected in their invoice after May 25.

Although 5GB of storage will now be standard, users can still request additional space if needed, at a cost of $5/per 1GB/per month. Please consult with your Department Administrator if you are interested in increasing your mailbox size.

New email attachment size limit
Also starting in mid-June, ITS will reduce the maximum email attachment size from 50MB to 25MB. This change was prompted for two reasons. Many mail systems, including Gmail and Hotmail, and several of our peer institutions, do not accept attachments over 25MB, causing many rejected messages for Weill Cornell users. Additionally, adjusting the limit prepares us to move email to a cloud-based service from Microsoft, which does not allow attachments over 25MB.

To send and receive attachments over 25MB, please use the File Transfer Service (https://transfer.med.cornell.edu). Please see our user guide for more information on this service.

The File Transfer Service allows the distribution of large files up to 2GB in size.
