Information about iOS 8 and the iPhone 6

Apple will soon release iOS 8, along with its new iPhone 6. When any major operating system or device is introduced to the public, ITS tests these new products to determine their compatibility with our services.

Devices affected by iOS 8 upgrade

These devices will be able to download iOS 8. Older models will not be affected:

  • iPhone 4S and higher
  • iPad 2 and higher
  • iPod touch 5th generation and higher

Recommendations for iOS 8 upgrade

We recommend the following to any current iPhone and iPad users accessing their WCMC email and calendar remotely:

1. Please wait to update to iOS 8. Although we do not anticipate any compatibility issues with our Microsoft Exchange service, our technicians have yet to assess how iOS 8 will function with all of our WCMC services. We recommend all faculty, staff, and students* wait before upgrading. We will inform users of our findings within two weeks as soon as we have successfully tested iOS 8.

*iPad services supported by Educational Technology Group are still under evaluation and it is advised that this user group wait to upgrade as well. Further communication regarding compatibility with Ed Tech-specific apps will be sent shortly.

2. Upgrade your apps. Many of your current apps may not work with iOS 8 unless they are upgraded. We recommend connecting to the App Store on your device and upgrading all of your apps, particularly MobileIron, before downloading iOS 8. Please note that you will not be able to downgrade to a previous version of iOS.

Recommendations for iPhone 6 upgrades

If you are considering purchasing the iPhone 6 for work purposes, we recommend the following.

1. Please wait to purchase an iPhone 6. Again, ITS has yet to assess how this new device will work with our current services. We will inform users of our findings once we have procured and successfully tested the device.

2. Back up your data. Before upgrading to the iPhone 6, please connect your older iPhone to iCloud or sync with iTunes on your desktop/laptop to back up your data. Instructions on how to do this are available here.

Note about Mac OS update
Please note Mac OS 10.10 is expected in October and more information will be communicated as it becomes available from Apple.
