Internet Explorer 9 & Upcoming Changes to Office 365 Webmail

Beginning Tuesday, January 12, 2016, Microsoft is implementing changes to Webmail (O365.weill.cornell.edu), which will impact users who access their WCM email via Internet Explorer 9.
 
How will this affect you?

  • If you access Webmail with Internet Explorer 9, you will no longer have full Webmail functionality and will only have access to Outlook Web App Light. This version is simpler than the standard O365 version, both in appearance and function. The light version also works with browsers that do not support the standard version of Webmail.

 

  • Desktop Office applications (those installed on your local computer) will NOT be impacted.

 
What do you need to do?

  • Check if you are using Internet Explorer 9
    • Launch Internet Explorer
    • Click Help on the top menu bar or the help button on the top right
    • Click About Internet Explorer to see the version number

 

  • If you are running Internet Explorer 9 or below on an ITS-tagged & managed computer and regularly access NYP web-based applications, like the ITA portal (ITS.nyp.org), we recommend the following options:
  1. Continue using Internet Explorer 9 and Outlook Web App Light until ITS distributes Internet Explorer 11 (more on this below).
  2. Use an alternative browser, such as Chrome or Firefox.

  • If you are running Internet Explorer 9 or below on an unmanaged home or personal computer and do not regularly access NYP web-based applications, you can upgrade your browser at the Microsoft website.

  • If you are running Internet Explorer 9 or below on an ITS-tagged & managed computer and DO NOT regularly access NYP web-based applications, like the ITA portal (ITS.nyp.org) before the planned upgrade in first quarter of 2016, you can upgrade your browser at the Microsoft website or contact ITS Support for assistance.

  • To find out if your browser supports the full feature set available in Outlook Web App, see Supported browsers for Outlook Web App. Note that if you use an unsupported browser, your Webmail account will convert to Outlook Web App Light, which is pictured below.

What if I need Internet Explorer 9 to access certain applications?
We are aware that some WCM employees use IE9 to access NYP web-based applications, like the ITA portal (ITS.nyp.org).  Again, you can continue to use IE9, but will have to use the Light version of Webmail.  
 
Will ITS be upgrading all ITS managed systems to Internet Explorer 11?
Yes, ITS is working with NYP to make Internet Explorer 11 standard across the institution in first quarter of 2016. The newer version will be distributed to all ITS-tagged and managed devices in the near future; more details will be available soon.
