ITS launches Android Device Support Beta!

ITS is beginning preliminary support for Android mobile devices. Because we are using Android security controls that are relatively new, both to ITS and industry, we are initially providing this service in beta. A beta designation indicates that small-group testing has been successful, and we are ready for those in the institution who are willing to try a pre-production service to sign up.

The control we are using to effectively secure Android devices is called "containerization." Containerization separates work and personal data and applications, while allowing them to coexist on the same device.

As with all mobile devices, Androids must be encrypted before they can be used for WCMC purposes.

Which Android devices do you support?
ITS is currently supporting a wide variety of Samsung, HTC, and Motorola mobile devices. Other Android models, like LG, Nexus, Sony, and Kyocera, are considered non-standard devices. For a full list of standard devices we support, visit our Mobile Devices page on the ITS website.

Please note that ITS will offer best effort support for non-standard devices, but we may have to charge an additional support fee due to these devices having compatibility and compliance issues with our services. As a practical matter, we cannot buy one of each device to test and learn how to manage it. Unfortunately, all Android devices differ a little bit.

Levels of service
Standard Android devices are eligible for basic connectivity to WCMC email, calendar, and contacts, Microsoft Lync, and standard guest Wi-Fi access. We also offer a full service option that includes anti-theft software, Epic Mobile*, as well as connection to the high-speed wireless network.

Pricing for Android device support is available on our website. Please see the "Cost" section on our Mobile Device page for more information.

All devices must be tagged and encrypted by ITS, and have MobileIron installed to receive any level of service. You can visit the SMARTDesk in the Wood Library at 1300 York to have your mobile device setup.

*Access to Epic Mobile requires approval from your Department Administrator.

Setting up your Android device

If you need to connect your Android device to WCMC services, you can do the following:

  • If you already have an Android device, visit the SMARTDesk in the Wood Library for assistance (hours listed below).

  • If you need to purchase an institutional Android device for your department, please contact our Computer Sales Group at csg@med.cornell.edu. If you have information on the specific device you are interested in, please include that in your email so we can better assist you. If you need a non-standard device, it is helpful to provide a reason so we can consider expanding support in the future.
