Transition in ITS Leadership

ITS will be undergoing a transition in leadership with the departure of Vipin Kamath as Chief Information Officer. After 19 years at Weill Cornell Medicine, Vipin has decided to take the reins from the retiring CIO at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. His last day at WCM will be February 28.

During his time at WCM, Vipin has played a pivotal role in shaping the technology solutions and services we use today. Vipin’s leadership helped launch the Weill Business and Weill Research Gateways, two systems that have streamlined myriad processes completed by administrative and research staff on a daily basis. He was also instrumental in establishing the first iteration of our Project Management Office (now the Office of Service Portfolio Management) to more efficiently manage IT projects and initiatives impacting faculty, staff, and students.

Internal to ITS, Vipin oversaw the release of ServiceNow, which aids the department in managing everything from IT requests and thousands of tagged devices to projects, knowledge resources, and more. Vipin also led our unique and visionary relationship with Gemini, recognized by Gartner as possibly the best partnership of its kind. His guidance has also been vital in architecting the ITS budget and implementing our service management approach.

“My journey with Weill Cornell is as old as my son, who is now a sophomore in undergrad. He put it best: No matter where you go or what you do with passion, Cornell will always be a part of you,’” said Kamath And he’s right—I may be moving on, but I don’t think Cornell will ever fully leave me. Over the past 19 years, I’ve built deep relationships, incredible memories, and a connection to this institution that will always remain.

To oversee this transition, Vinay Varughese has been named CIO. Vinay currently serves as ITS’s Senior Technology Officer, overseeing the department’s enterprise architecture program. Vinay began his career as a support technician and subsequently led support services and operations. He served as the Senior Director of ITS before he assumed his current role.

“ITS has been providing exemplary services to our community, through our technological prowess, strategic thinking, and, above all, our compassionate care for our users' needs – this will only grow in years to come built on the strong foundations established by Vipin,” said Varughese.
