Update on iOS 7 upgrade

ITS has finished testing several WCMC services with Apple's new mobile operating system, iOS 7. Based on our findings, there seem to be no compatibility issues with the majority of mobile services ITS provides, such as email and calendar services, MobileIron, and other applications.

The only exception is iTunes U. We have discovered an issue that prevents students from being able to properly view lecture videos, and are working with Apple to resolve this. Once this issue has been addressed, we will inform WCMC students.

What do you need to do?
You are free to upgrade your mobile device to iOS 7. However, we do not recommend upgrading if you use iTunes U. If you are considering purchasing the iPhone 5C or 5S for work-related purposes, you should be able to use your new phone to access WCMC services (except iTunes U).

Before you upgrade:

  1. Upgrade your apps. Many of your current apps may not work with iOS 7 unless they are upgraded. We recommend connecting to the App Store on your device and upgrading all of your apps, particularly MobileIron, before downloading iOS 7. Please note that many of your apps will look different with the upgrade, and you will not be able to downgrade to a previous version of iOS. (Preview how your apps will look.)
  2. Back up your data. Before upgrading to iOS 7 or purchasing an iPhone 5C or 5S, please connect your current device to iCloud or sync with iTunes on your desktop/laptop to back up your data. Instructions on how to do this are available here.

How to update your device to iOS 7
These devices will be able to download iOS 7 (older models cannot be upgraded):

  • iPhones 4, 4S, or 5
  • iPads 2, 3, 4, or Mini
  • 5th Generation iPod Touch or higher

Via Wi-Fi

  1. On your mobile device, go to: Settings > General > Software Update
  2. Your device will display instructions for downloading and installing iOS 7. Please make sure your device is plugged in during the upgrade; the installation process takes some time and may drain your battery.

Via iTunes (not recommended for iTunes U users)

  1. Plug your mobile device into your computer with your USB cord and launch iTunes (it may open automatically). On the left side of iTunes, find your device (e.g. "John's Phone") and click it.
  2. In the center of the screen, you'll see "Version" and a button "Check for Update." Click "Check for Update."
  3. A prompt will indicate that a new software version is available. Select "Download and Update."

Please note that upgrading to iOS 7 can take some time, depending on your device and connection speed. Your device will shut down at one point during the installation. Please do not disrupt the installation process.
