Cornell University has a long commitment to diversity and inclusion, embodied in the principle of “any person, any study." We continue the branch of diversity and inclusion by incorporating digital accessibility in course design, course content, video captioning, documents, and presentation slides. Faculty, staff, and students are often unsure of what we mean when we speak of creating accessible content. Creating accessible online content ensures all persons can access and interact with tool and resources without barriers.
Anyone developing content (text, images, video, etc.) for educational use should ensure that all the necessary elements are provided to make the content accessible to all.
Some examples include:
- Readable font sizes
- Strong color contrast
- Headers for tables
- Label images with alt text
- Provide video captions
Everyone at Weill Cornell can benefit from accessible content. Accessible web content promotes usability, engagement with the material, and welcomes learners to participate and receive the information equally.
Here are some useful tools for creating accessible educational content:
- Canvas Accessibility Checker
- Microsoft Word Accessibility Checker
- PowerPoint Accessibility Checker
- Panopto Video Accessibility Features
