ITS helps departments seeking to transfer, archive, or retrieve data among our supported platforms. This is ideal for departments who store large amounts of data and need assistance migrating it securely and efficiently to a different storage solution. Currently, ITS can assist departments with these data migration use cases:
- File Sharing to Scientific Computing Unit (SCU) High Performance Parallel Storage
- File Sharing to Microsoft SharePoint
- File Sharing to OneDrive Cloud Storage
- Data migration to and from AWS S3 Cloud Object Storage
Department administrators can request this service using our Data Migration Request form.

- Secure Data Migration: ITS will migrate your data with any risk classification – from the original storage offering to the destination storage offering using robust security measures to ensure confidentiality, integrity, and reliability throughout the process.
- Monitoring and Optimization: ITS monitors the migration process and optimize storage configurations to reduce costs and improve system performance.
- Documentation on Access: After migration, ITS provides clear documentation and instructions on how to access your data in its new location.
- Post-Migration Validation: ITS will work with the users to verify that all data has been successfully transferred and perform integrity checks.
Data Migration Types
- From File Sharing to Managed Hosting: Designed for performance-sensitive applications that require low latency and frequent data access.
- From File Sharing to Scientific Computing Unit (SCU) High Performance Parallel Storage: Intended for scalable, high-throughput storage optimized for data-intensive workloads such as AI, HPC, and Big Data. Supports parallel file systems with low latency.
- From File Sharing to Microsoft SharePoint: Best suited for collaboration-focused content, document management, and shared team workflows. Not designed for raw file storage or high-performance data access.
- From File Sharing to OneDrive Cloud Storage: Ideal for personal or small-team file storage with cloud access and sharing capabilities.
- Data migration to and from AWS S3 Cloud Object Storage: Enables departments to move data from on-premises storage to a hybrid tiered storage model. This allows data to be stored cost-effectively in the cloud while maintaining local access and caching for frequent used data. Amazon S3 Glacier can be used for long-term data retention and archival storage to significantly reduce costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does data migration take?
This varies depending on the service you selected and how much data you have. For example, to migrate data to Managed Hosting, it may take approximately three weeks to set up storage, migrate data, and remove data from the original location. ITS will work with you to plan and schedule your data migration with as little impact to your department as possible.
Can a department transfer data to another storage solution without ITS assistance?
There are some data migrations that can be done by departments, provided they are comfortable transferring the data. However, some data migrations, such as archival transfers, can be complicated, and ITS does not recommend that departments handle this on their own. Reach out to our Data Migration team online using our form for inquiries.
Is there a limit to how much data a department can transfer to a new service?
Data limits are dependent on the service selected. Our technicians will confirm any limits with you during the planning process.
