Be wary of IT support-related scams

ITS is asking the WCM community to be cautious of IT support-related scams. The scam typically begins as a pop-up window on your computer, or an email, asking you to contact support because something is wrong with your computer. The “support agent” will then have you download a screensharing application that is actually malware, or ask for your credentials and sensitive data.

What to do if you receive a suspicious support message

If you receive an IT support message that seems suspicious:

  1. Contact ITS directly. If you’re on an ITS-managed device, do not click links in the message or reply. Instead, verify that the message is legitimate by contacting ITS directly at 212-746-4878 or starting a chat with a technician at myhelpdesk.weill.cornell.edu.
  2.  Contact your device’s manufacturer. If you receive a suspicious support message on a personal device, it’s best to contact the manufacturer directly.
  3. Use Phish Alarm. Any suspicious emails can be sent to ITS for review to ensure they’re not phishing attempts. View our instructions on how to report emails with Phish Alarm.

Also, remember that ITS support technicians will never ask for your CWID and password, so do not give that information to anyone.
