Security Alert: Phone scam targeting medical staff

ITS is warning the WCM community to be on the lookout for a phone scam targeting medical practitioners. Some staff have reported receiving calls or voicemails from an individual posing as a DEA agent. The person may inquire about your medical license, claiming to be investigating fraudulent activity, and ask for personal details. They may even ask for payment, trying to convince you of their credentials by texting a fake DEA ID card, or spoofing the number of a real DEA office on your caller ID.

What do you need to do?

  • If you encounter one of these calls or messages, do not provide any information. Government agencies typically contact people through mail and would never request payment over the phone.

  • When in doubt, report the call to the FBI at www.ic3.gov.

  • If you received one of these calls and did offer personal information or payment, take steps to protect your identity at identitytheft.gov.
