Traveling abroad soon? Use our loaner device service

With the holiday season fast approaching, many WCM faculty, staff, and students may be traveling internationally for business or leisure. Traveling abroad exposes your devices to unknown environments that could compromise your data security. If you’re planning to work while traveling, healthcare data is especially valuable to malicious outsiders. ITS recommends taking advantage of our loaner laptop and smartphone service to ensure your data is accessed in a secure environment. This is especially important if you are traveling to a high-risk country. This service is available if you are traveling on behalf of WCM or for pleasure.

How do I borrow a laptop or smartphone

Requests for loaner laptops and smartphones can be submitted via myHelpdesk. ITS provides loaner Mac and Windows laptops and Apple iPhones at no charge. You can borrow devices for up to two weeks. The laptops come equipped with standard ITS-supported software, VPN access to our secure wireless network, and a charger.

Registering your international travel

The Office of Risk Management requires all faculty, staff, and students traveling internationally to conduct WCM activities to register their travel prior to departure using the  International Travel Registry Registering your trip allows you to receive real-time alerts and notices that are specific to your travel and facilitates WCM emergency support when needed.

Traveling to a high-risk country?

High-risk countries—namely China, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela etc.—represent foreign entities that pose a high risk of compromise or other security attack against the USA. In accordance with U.S. federal policy, all WCM employees and students who are planning personal or business travel to China, Russia, or Venezuela must complete the Electronic Export Information (EEI) filing.

Due to the situation in Russia and Ukraine, we strongly advise that you contact WCM’s Export Controls Office at exportcontrols@med.cornell.edu prior to arranging any travel to Russia, Ukraine, or Belarus.
