Beware the Ishings! Common Cybersecurity Scams

Phishing, vishing, smishing – oh my! With so many different types of scams out there, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month is the perfect time to learn about how you can identify them and protect yourself. This session will discuss some of the most popular scams happening today, as well as strategies to defend your data, like device compliance.  

It’s that time of year again! October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM), an annual collaborative effort between government and industry to help you maintain your security online. Throughout the month, ITS will be sending you tips on protecting your information and avoiding malicious attempts to extract your personal data.

ITS sends out regular phishing tests to help WCM faculty, staff, and students identify common online scams. Starting Monday, Sept. 29, you may see a minor change to our phishing tests. 

What's new

If you're sent a phishing test and pass, you will see the following message: 

Apple has released its newest operating system, macOS Tahoe. 

ITS supports this new OS, and has verified that all supported applications are compatible.

Should I upgrade to macOS Tahoe?  

If you use any applications not provided by ITS that are critical to getting your work done, ensure they are compatible with macOS Tahoe before you upgrade. You may need to look at the application’s website or contact their customer support team.   

ITS recently made some updates to migrate our spam management service. As a reminder, here’s what you can do to ensure you’re getting the emails you desire and block unsolicited emails.

Check your Junk folder

With WCM transitioning email filters from Proofpoint to Microsoft Outlook as of Aug. 26, messages identified by Outlook as unsolicited redirect to Outlook’s Junk folder. We recommend periodically checking this folder to make sure no important emails are being filtered in there.
